Nicole Carroll: A one woman mission to make a name in football

World Cup chopping board

It’s been a long day today in terms of football news, as the biggest story of the day, has been stretched out from news which was expected at midday, to the final squad selection being announced at 4pm.

There seems to be relatively few shock decisions within the squad, perhaps the biggest shock coming in the shape of Theo Walcott not being on the plane, and perhaps the inclusion of Stephen Warnock over Leighton Baines.

Walcott scored a hat trick against Croatia, and many believe he brings a different option to the bench. He’s the sort of player who you can throw on in the 70th minute to frighten opposing defenders and to create a little more movement down the wings.

Walcott’s inclusion in the last World Cup was a shock due to his lack of experience, and he eventually didn’t play a game during that tournament. Walcott has forced himself into the England set up however, and I suspected he would be on the plane seeing as he featured, in part, in the warm up games over the past week.

Another young hopeful who has been left mildly disappointed is Manchester City’s Adam Johnson. He’s had a brilliant season, and it was a real achievement to be included in the 30 man squad. He is quite obviously a super talented player, but perhaps Capello thought that this tournament just wasn’t the right timing for a player who is green to the England set up. Euro 2012 will soon be here, and Johnson can solidify his place in that tournament by featuring for England when they come back from South Africa.

Full England squad:

Goalkeepers:

David James, Robert Green, Joe Hart

Defence:

Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock

Midfield:

Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Shaun Wright-Phillips

Forwards: Peter Crouch, Jermaine Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney

Omissions from the squad:

Leighton Baines, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker, Adam Johnson, Theo Walcott, Darren Bent.
