Nicole Carroll: A one woman mission to make a name in football

A country of Fulham fans for one night only

leave a comment »

Tonight, many of this countrys football fans shall get behind one team for one night only. The team in question, Fulham, tonight take on Atheletico Madrid in the Europa Cup final.

Roy Hodgson has pulled off a fantastic cup run, which has seen his team go to the final, ahead of other stronger sides, including Englands own Liverpool. Fulham have become a hard team to beat under Hodgson, and it seems no suprise that he won the League managers association Manager of the Year award.

Although a domestic finish of 12th place may suggest Fulham have declined, this final tonight shows that Hodgson knows the formula for getting far in international competition, and the exposure of a final tonight shall only attract bigger names to Fulham and make them an ever competitive team. It’s almost hard to believe that Fulham were battling against relegation two seasons ago, when you see where they’ve got to tonight.

Fulham will have it tough, Athletico are a very good side and have quality players, especially striker Diego Forlan. Fulham have however beaten formidable opponents on their way to the final, including Roma and Juventus.

It would be fantastic to see an “unfashionable” team in the shape of Fulham lift the trophy tonight, and to be an inspiration for teams who aren’t normally mentioned in the same breath as European football. If Fulham can do it with their band of bargain buys and previously unknown European players, then why can’t anyone else?
