Have Chelsea thrown away the title?

After bowing out of the Champions League in a loss to Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan, the FA Cup and Premier League are the only silverware left that Chelsea can acquire this season. In a weekend where Arsenal and Manchester United piled on the pressure with wins for both sides, Chelsea have slipped behind in the Premier League race in a disappointing draw with Blackburn, a result which may worry some of Chelsea’s fans.

Although just four points separate third from first place, the final run in for each respective side is highly important in determining who will take the title, and its undeniably tough for Chelsea, with them still to face United, Villa, Spurs and Liverpool in the closing stages of the season.

United seem unstoppable, and the form of Wayne Rooney doesn’t seem to be faltering, with him scoring yet another goal today in the 2-1 win over Liverpool today. Chelsea have the pressure of having to win as many matches they can, whilst hoping United will drop points in the crucial stage of the season.

Arsenal have the best form in the league at the moment, with maximum points taken from their last 6 games and through to the next stage of the champions league. Confidence is high at Arsenal, and they know they can quite conceivably still win the title. In contrast, Chelsea have won 3 of their last 3 games, drawing twice and losing once. Their form must match that of Arsenal if they have any hope of overtaking them in the league and pushing for the top of the league.

It is only March, and it would be unfair to cast any of those three out of the title race. Chelsea need to improve their form though to stay within touching distance of those two above them. Whatever happens, it seems its going to be an incredibly tight and exciting finish to what has been a brilliant season.
